The life of a Juilliard dancer is a rigorous one. It almost feels like we aren’t humans because we spend so much time being dancers! But, making time for acting like a real human every once and a while can be very beneficial to our mental states during these four years. Survival at Juilliard means being fully immersed in everything that it has to offer, but also taking time to remove yourself and find your center. Apart from dancing, many people in the class of 2015 have multiple hobbies and interests that associate them with human life. How exciting!
For me, I am lucky enough to have a lot of friends from my home state of NC who also have moved to the big city to pursue their artistic dreams. Whether it be going to a musician friends concert or a visual artist’s gallery show, I just love to socialize with other groups of people and explore other worlds I am not familiar with. Being around different types of people inspires me. In terms of hobbies, I really enjoy journal writing, and listening to good music. I also am interested in the world of fashion, and like to keep up to date with what is going on in the industry. Along with dance, I hope to work in that field someday.
Here is what some of my classmates like to do with their free time!
Emily Tate: “I love Cooking and baking! I also like hiking and being in nature.”
Austin Goodwin: “I like to go to films and new exhibitions at art galleries. Gagosian is always amazing. Also the Brooklyn Flea in Crown Heights is one of my favorite places on Sundays... it’s a large warehouse full of vendors for clothes, furniture, jewelry, and food.”
Jeremy Coachman: “I go chanting at Kirtan gatherings. I also love hanging out with friends outside the dance division who I don't get to see very often. I practice Poi, and do Reiki energy healing sessions. Hunting for some new music tracks are weekend activities as well!”
Gemma Freitas: “Going to church, cooking, baking, DIY projects, painting, and coffee dates with friends!”
Amelia Sturt-Dilley: “I work on 5th Ave at Abercrombie as a model. I like exploring NYC cuisine, seeing shows (dance, Broadway, etc), all while trying to fit in rest and sleep!”
Kelsey Connolly: “Weather permitted, I like to walk around NYC with no where in particular to go! I see shows of all sorts- dance, drama, music… I love jazz clubs! I
always am trying new restaurants, and love to cook when I have the time- I find it relaxing! I love hanging out with friends, even if it's a night in. Overall, I like to explore this incredible city as much as possible! And to create my own adventures with the people I love.”
Tara Langdon: “I love baking cupcakes! I go to the movies on weekends and frequent a pottery painting place.”
Michael Marquez: “I enjoy long walks in the city, going to see shows, museums and exhibits. I like to spend hours in design stores/arts and crafts shops/stationery stores. I read a good book when I can or flip the pages (the sound and the action relax me a lot). I listen to music and imagine things. I love journaling. I like to work backstage for any kind of performances at Juilliard! I like to see people smile after a GLUCK outreach performance on a Sunday. And I love to EAT, EAT and EAT good food with smiling friends.”
Shelby Moran: “I love a leisurely lunch with my boyfriend Kevin. I like to spend time with friends, walk through the park, go out for dinner and drinks or to a movie, shop, and sleep!”
Olivia Frasco: “I wish I could play tennis and swim in the ocean all year round! I enjoy walking through the park, getting lost and figuring out a route to get home. I journal, go out for dinners, drinks, dancing, and BRUNCH (bottomless preferably). Typical things. Family is important and I love being with them... especially my Italian side. There is nothing more ideal to me than a night of Andrea Bocelli, delicious cooking, baking and laughs.”
Ironically, there is a hashtag that our class has created entitled #HumansofJuilliard2015. It not only speaks to us as dancers who train at a very prestigious school, but it also speaks to who we are as individuals. We are humans, we swear! And I hope whoever is reading this has more of an idea of the types of humans that make up this amazing class.
